Public health practice is the strategic, organized and interdisciplinary application of knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to perform essential public health services and related activities to improve the population’s health.

The practice of public health encompasses the actions or functions necessary to carry out the broadly defined mission of public health.

Public Health Practice for students in the RSCPHSW is fulfilled through the required 6 credits of Practicum in Public Health (3 credits) and an Integrative Seminar (3 credits). The Practicum in Public Health is a capstone course required for the completion of Master in Public Health. This course is a preceptor-guided experience in a public health organization which provides an opportunity for graduate students in Public Health to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

The practicum provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge gained from instructional programs and demonstrate their readiness for practice in Public Health upon completion of the practicum experience. The main purpose of this culminating experience is to allow the student to apply knowledge and theory to a particular area of practice and demonstrate capabilities to enter the profession. The field experience is conducted towards the end of the student's program, when at least 30 credits and all core courses have been completed.
