“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” –
Winston Churchill
“Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off. “– Franklin D. Roosevelt
Background
Dr. Nasar U. Ahmed is Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, Florida International University (FIU). He is also the founder of the Health Disparity Research Group (http://hdrg.fiu.edu) and serves as Graduate Director for the PhD in Public Health Epidemiology program and the MPH in Epidemiology program. He has national and international experience in intervention development, program evaluation, and research, having served as a researcher at Meharry Medical College, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, and at Tufts and Harvard Universities.
Dr. Ahmed’s early research involved the development of a three-stage behavioral trial model that has been successfully applied in intervention development by the World Bank, UNICEF, and USAID in several countries. His most recent research focuses on health disparities in cancer screening, physician recommendation for preventive health behavior, and interventions designed to address these issues. He has presented his research findings nationally and internationally, published extensively, and is an active member of the American College of Epidemiology. Additionally, Dr. Ahmed is a four-time recipient of the American Association for Cancer Research Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award. He was most recently recognized at the International Conference on Statistical Sciences - Recent Development in Statistical Sciences meeting held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he received conference acknowledgment for his presentation titled “An Application of Polytomous Logistic Regression in U.S. National Level Complex Survey Data to Study Racial/Ethnic Health Disparity.” He is founding president of the Council of Epidemiology Chairs and Directors in North America.
As director of the epidemiology programs at FIU, Dr. Ahmed’s philosophy is threefold: dedication to effective teaching of public health epidemiology, commitment to methodologically sound research, and creation of an environment that encourages ideas and exploration.
